Sara has the stylish idea of taking old wool sweaters, felting them and turning them into fashionable stools and lights. What a stunning and clever addition to any room or office. The Salvation Stool reinvigorates discarded and unwanted wool sweaters as upholstery. Felting the wool allows the material to be cut without the yarn unraveling, facilitating new constructions. The core of piece is constructed of plywood and urethane foam. While researching materials for ‘Design for a Dollar,’ Sara discovered how easily wool can be felted: simply wash sweaters in a hot cycle and the agitation, heat, and pressure produces a denser fabric that can be cut and reshaped easily and without unraveling. Add a discarded bottle and a light source, and you’ve got an award-winning design that is as light on the environment as it is heavy on talent. Construction and Build-Out of the stool’s body is shown here.
