Felted Outsiders

November 25, 2007 by Linda Lanese

Jenni tells it all, so I don’t have to put much efforts into this article. I can say that these cute “Outsiders” and something to see, so take a look at her blog, ETSY shop and her website. Jenni says: What’s up with the name 425 square foot art, anyway?Well…. it all started in a teeny weenie (425 sq. ft. to be exact!) apartment in Astoria, Queens (which by the by, was labeled a two bedroom! Ha! City livin’ at it’s finest!:). Anywho…I’ve always had a creative side, but never really knew how to express myself….and here I was pushin’ the ripe age o’ 30!!! So, feeling a bit “under the gun”, I decided to try anything & everything in the art/craft world…whatever the heck is creepin’ in the back of my lil’ pea-noggen as a matter o’ fact…and well…there ya have it…fearless ( I don’t believe in a right or wrong way of creating…just let it fly, baby!) caused by age-mixed in with a little romanticism/inspiration from the city….& a never ending desire to create!

A little bit about my art and philosophy:

I guess I’m what you’d call a “self-taught” artist. While I do have a great appreciation and respect for taking art classes, I do not have any formal training. I believe that every single one of us has the ability to create (whether we believe it or not…..you know who you are!!). It’s just a matter of whether it’s important enough in our daily lives to really give it a go. My style of art is always going to be silly (maybe even a bit odd!) and an extension of my inner 5 year old…because when it’s all said and done-that’s really who I am….a dreamer with thoughts of funny lil’ animals dancin’ thru my head!

Outsiders are my bigger sculptures based on my little drawings or doodles. The term “outsider” loosely refers to the genre of “outsider art”, which is known for its large number of self- taught artists and often primitive designs. Each outsider is definitely unique and comes packed with a whole lotta personality! Some are part human/part animal…with a twist of god knows what thrown in for good measure! Imagination sure is a funny thing sometimes!
