Knitted-Felted Coral Reef

August 1, 2008 by Linda Lanese

I have been totally blown away with the Hyperbolic crochet coral reef projects.  I decided to try my hand at knitting one and then two, three etc. of these lovely creations and I wanted to share them with you.  I love the knitted large coral and will give you the instructions if you are interested.  The people that are creating these coral reefs are doing an amazing job and you can find them at the following address; Hyperbolic crochet coral reef.

If any of you would like to share your reef patterns with us we would be delighted to have them.   If you have a blog or web site with the patterns, leave the addresses in your comments or email them to me 🙂

WOW. I am a coral reef ecologist, and I’ve never crocheted before, but man do I want to start now! I’ve recently started knitting, and would love to get some patterns so that I can make a mini reef as a farewell gift to one of my mentors.

What a awesome idea. I knit mine and made them up as I went along! Crochet is pretty easy to learn, give it a try:)

Can you post some of the coral reef crochet patterns? I don’t see any, and would love to try this. Thanks.

Hi – I know this is quite an old posting, but I’ve just stumbled across it. Wish I’d got a chance to see the coral reef. I’m currently knitting various coral shapes (who knows why these crafty urges overtake us!)and am browsing the web for ideas for shapes, colours etc.
Nice to see the pieces you made. Best wishes Valerie

I loved what you just did on those two creations. I am a knitter, but I can read alot of the crochet terminology. Can you send me the pattern for your creations? I am presently knitting a smaller version of the coral reef. I have a hyperbolic sphere, sea anemones, starfish, octopi, etc. I want to knit more of the reef, so that I can share it with others.

Like you, I was so fascinated with the crocheted coral reef projects, but my idea was to knit and felt them for a more delicate look. I used freeform knitting on double pointed needles, sometimes using for and sometimes using five. If you start at the bottom you can begin increasing your stitches until you have the scalloped edge look. I’m sorry to say that I have never written a pattern and I think that if you experiment with the double pointed needles you will find your way to achieving the look of the coral reef. If I remember correctly I used a USA #10 DP needles and the cascade 220 wool yarn, which is worsted weight. I hope this helps some and I would love to see what you come up with. The coral reef is a mesmerizing crocheting project and you can achieve the different looks crocheting and knitting and mixing them together. I really like the felted look. Good luck and keep in touch. I used silk white roving is the centers.
