One of the hardest things to get used to with needle felting is the needles themselves. They are very sharp, they break easily, and they don’t have a good way to hold them as they are a weird shape. (yes I can admit it, they ARE a weird shape!)
Over the years I’ve tried a bunch of ways to make them more comfortable to hold. I started off with the oven-baked clay, and this works ok, but I’m rather frugal and don’t use a lot on the ends of my needles. Plus if the needle breaks the whole lot goes in the bin so I don’t like to waste the clay.
You can just wind a rubber band around the end, but this doesn’t add much bulk. You can felt a ball and push the needle through it, but I find over time it starts to work its way back out of the ball!
I’ve bought wooden handles but getting the right size and shape takes some trial and error.
Today I have encountered this mind blowing, life hack, idea which I am very much wishing I had known years ago! I think you’re going to love it!
Check out what they have come up with at Bear Creek Felting:
Make your own comfortable Felting needle holder!
I’m going to go through my stash of pens right now and find a bunch of super comfortable to hold ones in different colours for each of my favourite needles!!
Hope this hack is as useful to you as it is to me!
Happy Felting!
