Needle felting………an engine part? Here’s something unusual!

October 22, 2021 by Liza Adams

SP Piston by Needle felting

I have to say, this one floored me!  The finished product is amazing, so very many hours to create something so well finished.  But it’s an engine part…….I am sure there will be some out there that love this.  Perhaps a mechanic who also appreciates the hours hand crafts take?  Regardless this is an interesting project to watch.  There are videos for each stage, and you can do a small or life sized one as well.

Here is the link to the ‘recipe’ on their website!

So much attention to detail.  I’m not sure that I agree with all the techniques used, but as artists we are constantly learning and fine tuning our work, so it can’t hurt to see how others do things, and sometimes you pick up something new that works for you.

One thing I will disagree with though is the way the insist you hold the felting needle.  Please don’t hold it at the very end as they show in their technique video, this gives you very limited control over the needle and is likely to cause repetitive strain in your hands.  If you work on something that takes this many hours, please purchase or make a needle holder to help relieve tension in your hands!

I cannot figure out how these pages came to be on this Yamaha motorcycle website, but it’s a great site to spend some time and learn a few new tricks, as well as think outside the box!  They have spent a lot of time creating the videos and ideas so I hope you enjoy your time visiting the Yamaha page!

Happy felting!
