Sunflowers for the Ukraine. Some gorgeous free tutorials for wet or dry felters!

March 9, 2022 by Liza Adams

I’m sure we are all at a loss as to how we can share our love and support for Ukraine.  Many of us will have helped financially if we can, signed petitions and joined in local events.  But for many of us we also want to show our love visually and especially through our beloved craft mediums, so here are a few projects to get you thinking about what you could make to wear and share our love and support for the Ukraine.

I found this wonderful video over on YouTube in which you can follow along and make a gorgeous needle felted sunflower.

This page has a neat way to use a sunflower as a pincushion.  They create the entire thing from store bought felt but I am sure you are able to create your own petals and more to make this including needle felting or even wet felting!  Click here to find the tutorial page.

How adorable is this wet felted baby hat in the shape of a sunflower?  I’m sure you can think up numerous ways to use this tutorial even if you don’t have a baby to wear the finished item, perhaps it could be turned into a wall hanging!  Click here to find the link to the tutorial page

Little Miss Sunshine, bathing in a wet felted sunshine hat.

Here’s something super different!  This sweet tutorial teaches you how to needle felt bought felt onto a thrifted cardigan to make your own design.  I’m sure you could also use fibre if you prefer but this project can be as hard or simple as you like!  Maybe you will be inspired to make something with your children, they could add felted sunflowers to their own wool jackets and knitwear to share their love and support as well!  Click here for the link to the tutorial

One last video to share, this is by Mums Makery and uses stencils or shapecutters to create a gorgeous, big sunflower that I’m sure you will love.  In this one you will also learn how to use felters wax to make a more realistic stem!

I hope you enjoyed these projects and find something that speaks to you.  While we can’t do anything to help from each of our small corners of the world we can share our love and thoughts for those suffering and remind others, through our work, not to forget what’s happening across the world.  Wear and share your sunflower creations in love.

Happy felting

Liza
