Free Felting Tutorial Friday: Washing Machine Felted Toadstool Cottage

January 2, 2026 by Shellie Wilson

This week’s Free Felting Tutorial Friday is pure fairytale magic!

If you’ve ever dreamed of creating a whimsical, storybook-style felted home for your gnomes, fairies, or tiny woodland friends — this washing machine wet-felted toadstool cottage from Castle of Costa Mesa is about to steal your heart.

It’s colorful, cozy, and surprisingly simple thanks to a clever technique that uses your washing machine to do most of the felting work for you!

Felting Made Easy (and Enchanting)

Forget standing at the sink for hours — this method is all about controlled chaos. You start by layering and shaping your wool into the cottage form, securing any extra details (like vines, windows, or little hanging leaves) before tossing it into a pillowcase and into the washer.

When it comes out, it’s perfectly felted and full of character — complete with a soft, firm structure that’s ideal for decorating or play. The red mushroom-style roof, tiny chimney puffing “smoke,” and miniature gnomes make this project look straight out of a children’s storybook.

A Magical Craft for All Ages

Whether you’re crafting with kids, preparing handmade holiday decorations, or building a fairy village for your mantel, this tutorial is both approachable and inspiring. You can customize colors, add doors or windows, and even stitch on extra felt embellishments for personality.

It’s an imaginative, joy-filled project that proves felting can be both artistic and practical. Plus — who doesn’t want a washing machine that doubles as a crafting tool?
