Noni Designer Pattern Give Away

March 18, 2008 by Linda Lanese

I am adding an extra pattern by Noni, her lovely signed “The Unfurling Roses” Pattern!  So double your pleasure.

Most of us knitters and felters have seen Noni’s glorious patterns and I am sure, like myself, you lust after many of Noni’s awesome designs.  Here is your chance to get one free.  This one is called the “Cascading Fuchsias Market Bag” and the instructions are for three different sizes that make this a diverse pattern and this is sign by Nora AKA Noni.  In twenty words or less tell us why you want this particular pattern.   Noni was generous enough to send me these patterns, to give away on Craft Gossip and I can’t express how thrilled I am to offer them to you.   Some of these marvelous patterns are sign by Noni, which makes them extra special.  If you just can’t wait, Google, Noni Patterns to purchase one.  I am trying to locate a yarn shop that is willing to give the winner a coupon toward the purchase of the Cascade 220 yarn needed for this project.  I am hoping some yarn shops will respond for the next pattern give away. I will be giving away many of Noni’s pattern in the days and weeks to come.  So get those clever “I want” your ideas together.  I am hopeful whoever wins this pattern will knit up and felt one of the bags and I will do an article on your finished bag.  This give away will end 11:00 pm Sunday the March 23.

About Noni:Nora Bellows “Noni Designer” was taught to knit by her mom when she was 12 but did not discover the world of felted bags until 2000. Her first bag was made from a simple pattern, but she immediately began to innovate. Soon, her unusual creations attracted the attention of customers in the Baltimore knit shop (Woolworks) where she worked (like so many of us) to support her knitting habit. In addition, she began making bags exclusively for private commission and for sale in a very few small boutiques around the East Coast. While Nora was at Woolworks, she also taught literature and composition at the University of Maryland, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and a PhD in Renaissance English Literature. After the completion of her degree in 2004, she moved (for love!) to Austin, Texas, where interest in her bags came more from other knitters than those seeking to purchase them. Her extensive background in teaching came in handy as she developed classes of all sorts: one on continental knitting, another on fixing mistakes, a third on making a felted bag, several on felted flowers, and, her personal favorite, an intense multi-day workshop that focused on designing one’s own felted bag.

It wasn’t until 2005 that she, after much pestering from her knitting students and Pat Rohmer (owner of Bluebonnet Yarn Shoppe in Cedar Park Texas), began to make her designs available to the intrepid knitter. During the Fall/Winter 2005 season she founded Noni Designs and launched a line of eight fashionable, innovative bag and embellishment patterns that are as beautiful as the designs they feature.

Would love to win this for two reasons. The first being that it is gorgeous. The second is that I am a machine knitter and would love the challenge of trying to convert the pattern.

Why do I want this pattern? Man…it’s gorgeous, it’s inspiring, it’s an adventure in felting that I’d love to take! I’m just getting started with felting myself and this would be a perfect starter for my creative-juices. Plus, living here in dreary Boston, this flashy colorful bag would be a real attention getter.

I would love to knit this bag, fuchias are my favourite flowers. I can sit in my garden surrounded by my lovely fuchia baskets, knitting my beautiful fuchia handbag. Heaven.
Handbags and fuchias my two passions in life, both come in all different shapes and sizes and you can’t have to many of either.

Noni should be an inspiration to all business women, I know her story inspires me! She is using her talents and education to the fullest. Having this pattern not only means me making a beautiful hand bag, but being able to be a part of Noni’s enterprise, something she has worked very hard to earn. You can see this just by looking at her craftsmanship.

My mom is coming to visit from Europe – she is an experienced knitter but she has never felted knits before (at least on purpose 🙂 ). So I hope trying something new like this would be perfect task that we can work on together when it rains outside.

This is one of the most beautiful designs I have ever seen. It is reminiscent of the bags that earlier generations carried. I would love to have a copy of the pattern. My daughter and I knit and have done so since we were both 6. I would love the challenge. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks Yvonne

Her purses show others what a wonderful art form knitting is. They encourage others to knit.

Wow! We are having the best time on Craft Gossip in the Felted Knits area.  Noni of Noni Design contributed some of her awesome pattern for me to give away to Craft Gossip readers.  The next pattern/yarn give-away will begin on Monday, March 24, 2008 and include the Cascade 220 yarn compliments of “One Fine Yarn” to complete the “Yummy Lunch” bag.  One Fine Yarn is the generous shop supplying the yarn and they deserve a huge thank you.  It is not too late to join the first Noni pattern give-away.  The Give Away ends Easter Sunday March 23, at 11:00 PM, EST time USA.  So come and visit and join in the fun and check out all the other crafting columns.
