Nuno Felting by Enee Fabric Designs

October 22, 2008 by Linda Lanese

Do you want gorgeous fashion accessories by a designer but runway prices are out of your league?  Browse through Enee Fabric Designs they are amazing and you will want several for yourself and as gifts.  Enee creates Nuno felting that is stunning and unique.

Enee profile:

My name is Nancy Schwab, and my business name is the phonetic pronunciation of my initials, which are Nancy Elizabeth. Passed on from great-grandmother on down, I cherish Elizabeth.

I’ve lived in San Francisco since the mid-1990’s, after several years in NYC, but grew up in Buffalo. Snow is a very nice and distant memory, and I gave away all my hats and mittens and long time ago.

I’ve been creating and designing nuno felt for 5 years, after several successful years as a fabric painter. I’ve sold over 1,000 nuno scarves and gifts online and at live crafts events that are booked 2 years in advance due to the popularity of my products. My designs ONLINE are always priced WHOLESALE! to give you an incredible bargain on 100% handmade creations.

My arrival at this particular medium was the result of a life-long search for artistic challenge, and when I took my first workshop from one of the originators of the technique, nuno felting became like breathing. If I am not felting, I’m thinking about design, color, what other fibers might work, and the ideas percolate until they turn into one of my nuno creations!

This year, I’ve changed my technique quite a bit. It now takes about 4-5 hours just to prepare the fibers before I get started on a nuno design. The colors are fabulous, the designs are much more complicated, yet I still make them available to you for the wholesale price!

Hello, I have heard about nuno felting but have some questions about doing it myself. Have you heard about making nuno felting with water soluable stabilizer? I am doing it for a competition this sunday and was wondering, do I need to sandwich wool and lace and my mohair locks between two pieces of water soluable stabilizer or the other way around. Also, can I put the wool in between sheets of muslin and then basted and put in the washing machine? or what would you suggest? I prefer to use the washing machine if that is possible. Do you know of any hints you could give me to hopefully make a perfect piece for the first try? I am using it to make fabric for a sheer jacket, hopefully kind of lacy! Thank you!

    Hi Linda,
I don’t have any experience using “water soluble stabilizer” – I just do it the old fashion way through the wet felting technique. I don’t think that you can realistically use the washing machine with a nuno felted piece because of the uncontrolled agitation involved with a machine, but I have no experience with “water soluble stabilizer”
which could make a difference. Nuno felting is really about layering
and controlled agitation (like most other traditional feltmaking).
You need to sandwich a fabric, like silk chiffon, between two layers or more of wool or another protein fiber, apply water/soap, and controlled agitation. Christine White’s book called “Uniquely Felt”
has very good instructions for nuno felting if I remember correctly.
Also, here’s an article that I found on using water soluble sheets
    from Pat Sparks’ site:
