Carrots, Carrots everywhere! At night when I’m watching television I like to do smaller projects and I’ve been knitting things for Easter. I’ve tried several carrots as you can see from the pictures. For the large carrot I use the cascade 220 Orange, 100% Wool worsted Weight: and for the smaller carrots I used Gjestal Ullteppegarn 39 orange 100% wool fingering yarn. Three of my carrots are knit and one is crocheted. I like the look of the knitted carrot best. I’ve never written a pattern before, so bear with me. I like using the wooden needles because the yarn does not slip off of these as easily as it does plastic or metal. I just named the yarns I used, but you can use any worsted weight wool and fingering wool you would like or what you have her stash. I would love it if you’d experiments with crochet and knitting and if you come up with an easy pattern please share it with us.
This pattern is for the large carrot:
- Use 4 US size 8 dp knitting needles: co 15 sts. I begin by Using the 4th needle and knitting by stitches onto three needles and then join, being careful not to twist sts. Knit 2 rnds
- Rnd 3 inc. I sts on each needles (18) sts
- Knit 2 rnds.
- Rnd 6 inc. 1 sts on each needle (21) sts
- Knit until piece measures 3“
- Decrease rounds:
- Rnd 1: *k2, k2tog k3* on each needle (18) sts
- Knit 2 ½ inches more
- Dec. 1 sts on each needle knit until piece measures 1 ½” more
- Dec. 1 sts on each needle knit until piece measures 1” more
- Dec. 1 sts on each needle knit 2 rnds.
- Dec. 1 sts on each needle really
- Place all 6 sts. On one needle and cut yarn leaving about 8” with a large needle draw through the stitches and tie off leaving a 4“ tail.
I Hand felt with hot water and a bar of soap until tight. See picture!
After I dried my carrots I stuffed them with a less expensive roving and then began creating the greenery with crochet. I use the Gjestal Ullteppegarn in line green because it is a much finer yarn and with my crochet hook I began picking up stitches around the diameter of the top opening. After I had the stitches in place I singled crocheted around about three times and then freeform crochet. Going back in to a stitch chain 9 or 10 chains and single crochet 4 into the second chain from the hook and for the next two stitches slip stitch. Again single crochet into the next stitch four times or more, whatever will achieve the look you want. Repeat this process using different lengths of chaining to get that freeform leaf look. I did about four or five of these chains and once you’re happy with the results crochet back into the bottom and tie off. I did not felt the green foliage.
If you try this please let me know how it turns out for you. As I said this is my first pattern that I’ve actually tried writing down as I created my carrot.
