Needle Felt Fabric……..without wool? You won’t believe this!

November 1, 2021 by Liza Adams

This week I was looking for something a bit different to share with you!  So I did a bit of research and came across this article purely by accident.  As I checked through the process it came to light that they weren’t just ‘needle felting without wool’ as suggested in the article.  They are needle felting fabrics together to form fine, very unusual, eclectic fabrics!  So no fibres are even used to create these gorgeous, textured and unique fabrics, it’s done by felting two fine fabrics together.  They predominantly use silk fabrics which have been made using different techniques, ie silk chiffon and silk velvet (which I didn’t even know existed)!

In the article they show this done with a sewing machine fitted with a bed of felting needles, but if you were working on a small piece to add to something else I don’t see why you couldn’t do this with your multi needle tool working freehand.  The main requirement is using the right fabrics which they give you some great advice about in the article.  I believe you would also need to make sure you worked on a firm surface, so either a new piece of upholstery grade foam, a firm wool felting mat or perhaps a brush designed for felting on.

Whether this is something you are likely to do or not, learning how different media works together and understanding new techniques is very useful for any crafts person looking to know their craft better.  As I have probably said before, we never stop learning and should really always be looking for new and interesting ideas to keep our love of creativity alive!

I hope you will learn something new and interesting from the page I’ve shared, I find it gets you thinking about all the ways you could adapt this and use it in your own work!

Happy felting!
