The Sweetest Gift — and My New Favorite Felting Mat

February 23, 2026 by Shellie Wilson

This Woolbuddy felting mat came to me in the loveliest way — as a birthday gift from a wonderful lady in my local felting group. She’d seen the state of my old foam pad (let’s just say it had seen better days) and surprised me with this wool mat. It was such a thoughtful gesture, and honestly, I’ve fallen in love with it.

Right away, I noticed how much nicer it feels to work on. The surface is soft but firm, and it grips the fibers just enough without leaving those little foam crumbs everywhere — a big win in my book! It’s made from 100% wool, so it’s natural, durable, and feels perfectly in tune with the craft itself.

I’ve been using it for about a month now, and it’s holding up beautifully. It doesn’t compress like foam does, and it’s gentle on my needles, which means fewer breaks and smoother felting sessions. I can see why so many experienced felters swear by these mats.

Every time I pull it out, I think of that sweet birthday surprise — a reminder that handmade communities are full of the kindest people. And now I can’t imagine going back to anything else.
