Free Felting Tutorial Friday: Needle Felted Bear Face

June 12, 2026 by Shellie Wilson Leave a Comment

This week’s Free Felting Tutorial Friday is for those of us who love giving our felted creatures a little extra personality. If you’ve ever wanted to bring real expression and depth to your animal sculptures, this project is one to bookmark. you will need to register for a free account to access these free downloads.

This free tutorial from Living Felt walks you through the process of needle felting a bear’s face, teaching you how to sculpt features like eyes, nose, and muzzle that make your bear look truly alive. Created by artist Michele Freeman, it’s a detailed but approachable guide that’s ideal for anyone ready to move from simple shapes to lifelike characters.

Building Character, One Stitch at a Time

The beauty of this project is that it shows you how to go beyond the basics. You’ll learn how to layer wool to form contours, define the eye area, and shape the nose for realism. There’s a lot of subtlety here — from shading under the eyes to giving the muzzle a soft blend of tones — and that’s what makes it so rewarding.

It’s one of those tutorials that feels like a little masterclass in sculptural felting. By the time you finish, you’ll not only have an adorable bear head, but also new confidence in shaping faces for future projects, whether they’re animals, dolls, or fantasy creatures.

Why You’ll Love This Tutorial

  • It’s an intermediate-level project that stretches your skills.

  • You’ll learn realistic shaping and shading with wool.

  • It’s taught by a talented artist, Michele Freeman, with clear guidance.

  • The finished bear head is full of character and charm.

This is a wonderful next step if you’ve tried smaller animal projects before and are ready for something more detailed. The process teaches you patience, precision, and how to “listen” to the wool as you shape it — it’s meditative, creative, and deeply satisfying.

My Felting Tip

When felting a face, start lightly. You can always add more definition, but it’s tricky to undo over-felting. I like to use a fine-gauge needle for the nose and eye details — it lets you control each fibre and create that velvety surface. And remember, every bear face turns out different — that’s part of their charm!

So grab your wool, settle in with a cup of tea, and spend this weekend bringing a new little bear to life. Don’t forget to share your version — I’d love to see how your bear’s personality turns out!
