Free Felting Tutorial Friday: Felted Christmas Tree

November 21, 2025 by Shellie Wilson

This week’s Free Felting Tutorial Friday brings us a magical touch of holiday spirit — a Wet Felted Christmas Tree that glows with cozy handmade charm. Created by the talented team over at Felting and Fiber Studio, this project captures everything we love about wool crafts during the festive season — warmth, texture, and creativity.

This project uses wet felting to create a sculptural tree shape that can be lit from within, turning it into a glowing centrepiece for your winter table or mantel. The process is wonderfully hands-on, and once you see how the light shines through the felt, you’ll understand why this tutorial is such a seasonal favourite.

(Note: In our version, we’ve pictured the tree in lush forest green — but the technique works beautifully in any shade you fancy!)

Sculpting the Season in Wool

This tutorial walks you through the full process — from layout to felting and shaping — using layers of wool that are carefully cut and sculpted into tiers to resemble branches. Once felted, the tree holds its shape perfectly, creating a soft, structured form that’s both whimsical and modern.

You can leave it plain for a minimalist Scandinavian feel, or decorate it with a few tiny felted ornaments or fairy lights. Either way, it’s a project that brings a handmade heart to your holiday decorating.

Why You’ll Love This Tutorial

  • It’s festive, creative, and endlessly customizable.

  • You’ll learn wet felting techniques for shaping 3D forms.

  • It’s perfect for holiday decor or handmade gifts.

  • You can easily add lighting or decorations for a magical touch.

The original tutorial also includes thoughtful tips for working evenly and creating smooth, sturdy felt — so your tree stands tall all season long.

My Felting Tip

When shaping your tree, try felting over a cone form or template to help maintain the taper as you work. For a natural forest look, blend several shades of green wool together — a bit of mossy olive with brighter evergreen tones creates beautiful depth and realism.
